When you intend to open a tapas bar and end up with a coffee lounge because Mum doesn’t think your tapas cut it… it’s pretty Awkward.
Natasha has not just embraced this feeling though, she’s bottled it’s essence, put it in a spray bottle and covered every corner of her humble cafe.
There’s no shortage of delightful oddities at Awkward Cafe Geelong. Yet somehow it feels like home. It’s something genuinely different from a lot of the other cafes in Geelong.
It also extends this point of difference to it’s menu. Everything is handmade on site and Tash strives to offer unique options that you won’t find anywhere else. The Nutella Cream Pie and Twix Caramel Tart are just two of the many examples behind the display cabinet.
Part of the reason the decor makes it feel like home is because a lot of the items are the everyday objects you would have found at your Grandparent’s place. On this point Natasha says that while some of the items were picked up at markets from around the region, as much as possible was sourced from the family home.
The lights came from under the house, the bike is her Grandfather’s and the Sunbeam Mixmaster was her Grandmother’s.
The detail even extends to areas of Awkward Cafe Geelong that customers don’t often get to see. Out back there’s a secret garden with fresh mint and strawberries in old school desks and cacti in troll heads.
Space-wise there’s a good amount of room but if you’re travelling with a pram prepare to sit outside or on the front bench, as while it’s not impossible, it can be a little tight getting down to the tables.
If you’re in Malop Street and looking for a coffee with a theme, Awkward Cafe Geelong is definitely the place to pull up a lounge chair.
