The Usual Suspects Torquay is the result of something that started with a garage in Gilbert Street, a 1kg roaster, some green beans and a curious mind. From there it’s grown into the cafe that Ange and Ross had dreamt about for years.

Long Black - The Usual Suspects

They waited a long time to find the right place while operating as a hole in the wall cafe in Gilbert Street. The former timber yard in Baines Cresent was the perfect spot and has turned out to be hot cafe property as light industry moves out to the business park and retail expands in the area.

Usually the beans in the grinder have come from a roaster that’s located somewhere else however at The Usual Suspects Torquay they specialise in South American beans and every single one is roasted on-site by Ross in plain view of the dining area!

Roaster - The Usual Suspects

That’s matched by a completely vegetarian menu that’s served in generous portions and made from healthy ingredients that are as sustainable as possible.

Quinoa Porridge - The Usual Suspects

The cafe itself has many unique elements to it such as it’s striking building full of rich recycled timber from Timber Zoo. The tables came from Williams and Campion. The La Marzocco coffee machine is painted matt black.

They’re also big supporters of the Black Dog Institute which is a world leader in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mood disorders such as depression and bipolar disorder. The Usual Suspects Torquay speaks openly about Ross’ battle with bipolar which is why they’re associated with the institute.

Donut - The Usual Suspects

Even though society is getting to a point where it’s more comfortable with having conversations about mental illness, there’s still work to be done and it’s nice to see a cafe giving prominence to the issue on their chalkboard along with the rest of their brand messaging.

From the back - The Usual Suspects

There’s plenty of room for the kids at The Usual Suspects Torquay so bring the pram. Parking is also great with plenty of room on-site even if the street is busy.
