Even if you’ve never stepped foot inside Born and Bread Bakehouse Geelong, it’s likely you’ve heard of them, or had a gourmet sandwich made with their specialty loaves of bread. That’s because in the short time that they’ve been open they’ve managed to get their bread on the shelves of a significant number of cafes through Geelong and surrounding areas.
Many of the cafes we’ve reviewed such as the Kilgour Street Cafe and Grocer stock their goods and there are many others that we’re still getting round to as well.
With the coverage they have, you might struggle to believe that it’s only been one year since they opened their doors just off Pakington Street in Newtown. They’ve done exceptionally well.
This might be helped by Born and Bread Bakehouse Geelong’s commitment to quality, and the fact that they really know what they’re doing. Ben Gower is from a long line of Bakers. Look to the walls and you’ll see many pictures of his Grandfather and Dad horsing around in their baking gear back in Warrnambool, which is where Ben is originally from.
As you approach their shopfront bakery cafe you’ll be hit with the aroma of fresh baked specialty bread and as you walk in you’ll find an enormous range of mouthwatering baked goods both sweet and savoury.
We’re talking gourmet rolls with all the trimmings, tarts, croisstants, macaroons, and soup (with a side of bread of course). They also make a great Roastcraft Coffee.
We visited around 11am and the sun was streaming in through the large glass window and door that takes up most of the front of the building. The bench facing out to the road is the perfect spot to stop for a morning coffee, grab a Surf Coast Living magazine and take it all in.
