It’s easy to write off a first hit as a stoke of luck. Good timing, first to market, right place right time etc. The real test is getting it right the second time round. This really separates someone who’s fluked it from someone with true talent.
Neck of the Woods Cafe Geelong looks like true talent. It’s a new cafe that’s opened up in Myers Street, created by Greg and Georgie Matheson. They’re the couple that brought us Fuel Cafe, which is widely regarded as the best cafe in Geelong.
Is Neck of the Woods Cafe Geelong a carbon copy of Fuel? No. It’s a beautiful light filled space with a more feminine feel. There’s a subtle blue theme throughout combined with whites, light hardwoods, soft furnishings, touches of brass and flowers. There’s also an outdoor space which will be a real treat as we move into warmer weather.
While it would be harsh to do so, you could write off Fuel’s success to a number of luck factors such as establishing itself long before Geelong’s CBD was flooded with cafes, or hitting on the industrial style just as it was taking off. The challenge with a second cafe is doing something genuinely different and interesting in a crowded environment.
Neck of the Woods Cafe Geelong has achieved this with a truly unique atmosphere. The only thing that’s been copied verbatim from Fuel are the values. These are the aspects of Greg and Georgie’s unique character that are infused into their work and are the things you can actually attribute to their longevity.
You’ll experience the same friendly hospitality where the staff know your name. They’re still fussy about presentation, bordering on obsessive. The Campos coffee is always consistent and there’s no rush to move you on. Although it’s part of what makes them great, sadly they don’t work weekends.
Definitely try them out, it’s another winner!
