What’s the best use for an old weatherboard cottage on Pakington Street in Newtown? Definitely gutting it and creating an award winning cafe like The Cottage Cafe Geelong.

It was already great and that was before a recent renovation. The Cottage Cafe Geelong is now better than great. The strong points have always been it’s food and coffee in a cottage setting but it used to be incredibly difficult to order and pay for example. This was due to the main register being behind a hole in the wall. As you can see the main counter has been raised and opened up. Far more inviting now with many enticing treats to boot.

Meals are generous and the variety is good. If you’re looking for a killer all day brekky, you’ve got options and won’t be left disappointed. It’s clear the kitchen is full of talented people that take pride in the presentation of their meals. The corn fritters taste as good as they look.

This attention to detail extends to the drinks menu where the crema on long blacks arrive unbroken and the chocolate milkshakes contained in adorable milk bottles.

Out back is the eclectic granny garden with a collection of homestead style items that may have been left by the previous owner. It’s pretty but a little nippy as Autumn fades and Winter creeps in. The potbelly stove doesn’t have a chance of heating the whole area but it’s charming none the less.

You may be happy braving it however inside is the safest bet. Some of the new additions that add to the beauty of The Cottage Cafe Geelong are the green wall and the new plywood bookshelves that house a serious set of speakers.

The beans are thanks to Atomica Coffee, a Melbourne based roaster going on 20 years in the business. Definitely child and pram friendly. Open weekends which is a bonus for locals and tourists alike.
